About Us
Open House Christian Involvement Centres is an nondenominational, not-for-profit, volunteer based, community organisation providing friendship and support to all people, especially those in need or who are disadvantaged. It was formed in 1971 when our founding director, Mr George Farrington AM, was challenged by the youth of the day to provide an alternative to the pub, because as some said, “home is like hell”.
Over the years our work has grown in many ways to reach out to a diverse range of people in our community, irrespective of their backgrounds, social, racial or religious beliefs. Many are lonely or isolated, some have physical or mental disabilities, others struggle with addictions while some come from dysfunctional homes and others face normal growing up issues. All are welcome.
We believe that the development of positive friendships helps people grow through the struggles and circumstances in their lives.
Our Vision
To be a place where people can belong.
Our Mission
To give long term friendship and support to youth and adults in our community, particularly those who are disadvantaged or socially isolated.
To provide a relaxed environment where people are welcomed, encouraged to feel they belong, and are cared for and supported.
To give opportunities to people to express themselves and encouragement if they wish to make positive changes to their lives.
Our Christian Basis
Open House was started and continues as a Christian response to our understanding of the Christian message (the Gospel), and the needs of the community
Our vision and mission is therefore based on our acceptance of the dignity of each person and their social, racial and religious beliefs. We further understanding that each person is unique and loved by God.
Our Staff, Volunteers and Supporters
Open House carries out its work through its 11 staff and 80 volunteers. Our staff are drawn from various walks of life and bring an abundance of experience to help people grow. The volunteer component of Open House is unique and valued, as it greatly enhances the range of skills and abilities available to meet the variety of needs in our community.
Staff and voluntary team provide long term follow-up support and home visitations as required. We also provide 24-hour support, for those with urgent needs, through a telephone service.
Our Accountability
We are an Australian public company limited by guarantee a charity with public benevolent status, endorsed as a Charitable Institution and Deductible Gift Recipient and governed by a group of volunteers under the title of Executive Council.
